JOB SATISFACTION AND AGE

Is there a relationship between job satisfaction and age?

The relationship between the employee job satisfaction and the age differences is an evaluative and commentating factor in the human resource sector. Several employment surveys stipulated that matured employees are in a high job satisfaction level when compared to young employees.

The excessive occupational contentment among senior workers perhaps because of the advancement and success accompanied by the service. Normally, they are entitled to higher salaries, greater welfare such as extra allowances, bonuses, loans, medical facilities, etc. and especially the stability and embrace of the stakeholders in the organization.

Job satisfaction prefer to enhance with the age and seniority, but maybe possibilities in decline the satisfaction level when an employee works at the same place with the same duties. Prior researchers proposed that with the age and seniority, they offered better remuneration and benefits so that the job satisfaction level escalated. As per observations, it is found that the period of service in an organization is also a factor that can determine job satisfaction. Because with the extension of the service the job satisfaction level will be rise-up and parallelly the satisfaction level will drop-out with time. Anyhow, according to many researchers, job satisfaction rather contradictory rise-up with the age even declines with time.

Psychological scientists, Shodhana Dobrow, Yoav Ganzach,Yihao Liu states that “We demonstrated that age and tenure have opposite relationships with job satisfaction, such that job satisfaction increased as people aged yet decreased as tenure advanced and received a boost when people moved to a new organization, thus starting the cycle anew..” (Job Satisfaction Tends to Increase with Age)

The investigation of age the difference in career satisfaction basis on the task collaboration, personal and family views, to activate contrast in the duties assigned. With reference to the observations on the “QUALITY OF EMPLOYMENTS SURVEY “(1972-1973) data, it is realized that “The age is positively related to job satisfaction” (Kalleberg and Loscocco, 1983) A comparatively meaningful part of the variations are described by the inequality in industry ethics and recognition in the job. The said observations are compatible with both organization and career interchange clarification of age variation in job satisfaction

From the said survey was done with the participants of 1455 American workers, researchers examined two clarifications.

“[1] The relationship between age and satisfaction is the result of a generational difference in education and value system.[2] The relationship is simply a function of older workers having moved into better jobs across their careers.” (Janson and Martin, 1982)

According to another survey done in a multinational organization, data collection was done by a digital questionnaire from 1036 employees of a Dutch Division. This research explored the impact of the age of employees on the connection linked with work attributes and the motivation of the workforce and job satisfaction. There were two interconnected phrases on work stimulation that were notable in the survey.

[1] The positive correlation between Motivating Potential Score (MPS) and motivation was much stronger for older than for younger employees.”

[2] The positive association between career opportunities and motivation was much stronger for younger employees than for older employees.”  (Age-Differences in Work Motivation and Job Satisfaction. The Influence of Age on the Relationships between Work Characteristics and Workers' Outcomes - Nicolle P. G. Boumans, Ad H. J. de Jong, Sara M. Janssen, 2011)

So, to stand stimulated, senior and older employees required more deep-rooted demands when completing their tasks. Then the motivation of junior or younger employees are escalating because they are able to open and offered more career opportunities than older employees.

Therefore, it is realized that a perfect supervisor is able to handle the situation by being an attentive career counselor in the context of contributing to the aging strategy to conserve all the employees of different ages.

    1. This concept is variable according to personal attitudes of an employee. But, generally, compared to older employees, most of the young employees are not satisfied with the job because their expectations are very high and they are exited to fulfill those forecasts within a short period of time. But, the organizations are having their own policies, vision and mission. Among those restrictions, no matter the capability, qualifications and experience, young staff members have to stay sometime patiently, till cover-up their expectations, followed by greater job satisfaction.
