JOB SATISFACTION
What is Job Satisfaction?
Job satisfaction is a very
important and one of the most researched inconstant term in the organizational
Human Resources sector. As “Satisfaction” is a psychological aspect, it
cannot be perceived or cannot be counted. But its articulation within the human
mind is intelligible.
Employees feeling about happiness and the level of satisfaction on the job, which act as a motivation to work
can be defined as job satisfaction. Also, the scale of cheerful affection that an individual has about his/her employment can
be further defined as job satisfaction.
Simply the job satisfaction is
the scope of optimistic or point of view that individuals have towards their
job. On the other hand, job satisfaction has a relationship with the affection
and the psychological features of individuals occurrence with regard to their
job.
Researchers describe the Job
Satisfaction as “Pleasurable emotional state resulting from the appraisal of
one’s job as achieving or facilitating the achievement of one’s job values.” (Locke, E.1969)
Also, they describe the Job
Dissatisfaction as “The unpleasurable emotion state resulting from the
appraisal of one’s job as frustrating or blocking the attainment of one’s job values
or as entailing disvalues.”
There are so many
distinguished authors and researchers offered their personal definitions on job
satisfaction from the early decades of the 20th century. Hoppock (1935),
Locke (1969), Smith et al. (1969) Vromm (1982), Schultz (1982), Wexley and Yukl
(1984), and Lofquist and Davis (1991) are some of them.
According to E.A. Locke, ‘Job satisfaction is a
pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one’s
job or job experience.”
According to Fieldman and Arnold, “Job satisfaction
will be defined as the amount of overall positive effect or (feelings) that
individuals have towards their jobs.”
According to Andrew Brin, “Job satisfaction is the
amount of pleasure or contentment associated with a job. If you like your job
intensely, you will experience high job satisfaction. If you dislike your job
intensely, you will experience job- dissatisfaction.”
According to Keith
Davis and Newstronx, “Job satisfaction is the set of favourable or
unfavourable feelings with which employees view their work.”
Though a detectable progress can be observed on the definition of job satisfaction during the last few decades, but generally, the interpretation is related to an individual’s work in an organization which has an optimistic perceptual response.
Satisfaction on the job of
respective employees can be influenced directly by the stability of an
organization. When employees are satisfied with their job, they work with a
good commitment towards organizational goals, always concern about the quality
and quantity of work, and maintain a higher retention rate. Also, such employees
are tending to be more productive in the organization.
The absence of job the satisfaction of employees bringing down the organization’s productivity and
also the presence of job satisfaction of employees bringing up the productivity
of the organization.
Therefore, the employee’s job
satisfaction is a very valuable factor in an organization, which should be highly
considered by employers.
