What are the factors that determine the employee satisfaction level?




‘’A happy employee is a productive employee”

A frequently followed statement by the management of successful companies. Hence, it is realized that job satisfaction of employees in an organization is an important technique used to inspire the employees.

On the other hand, a pride the employee is a cheerful and delightful person as the happiness about the career mainly influences on the overall life of them, because most of the employees consume a significant time period at the workplace place through-out their spans and it is believed that such satisfied workers having a greater physical and mental well-being.

Generally, the length of optimistic emotion or outlook that an individual employee is having with regard to employment can be defined as job satisfaction.

According to the several research studies regulated over the years to straighten to find out the factors that affect job satisfaction and those researches have disclosed compatible connection of specific variables with job satisfaction.




Depending on the organizational environment and the desire of independent employees, the elements providing to job satisfaction differ. But there are some nuclear fundamentals that can be useful for employers to transmit the atmosphere of the workplace into a heartening, sympathetic, encouraging, and compatible one for successful employees.

There are few explanations that can be observed when studying the factors which are directly dominating job satisfaction.

Organizational Factors, Work Environmental factors, work itself and Personal Factors can be identified as the main sources of job satisfaction.

§           Salaries & Wages

       Salary or remuneration of an employee is an outstanding factor that prominently takes part      in the theme of job satisfaction, because it has the utmost  importance  in the point of view      of  the retention of employees in an organization.

It seems to be the prominent factor when deciding the living standard of an individual person, as an employee or as a citizen. And also, it signified the establishment and the standard of the organization. Even to bring-off the first level of Maslow’s model of satisfaction, the major need is money. 

Another crucial element is that the employees are usually considering the payment as a thought of the employer’s review for them. 

Also, the remuneration reflects as an emblem of esteemed accomplishment as the higher salaries are offered for the excessive extent of subscription with regard to authoritative functions.


*     Promotion Chances

     Promotion chances are one of the vital aspects that affect job satisfaction. Promotion stipulate the value of employees for the stability of the organization which is a giant honourable raise. On the other hand, the employees are entitled to the promotion as the topmost accomplishment in employment. The workers are tremendously passionate about obtain such recognition.

A promotion proceeds an employee to the ultimate position within the organization as well as the community, which followed by several settings, such as high rise salaries & packages offered by the management, extra privileges with the reputation among colleagues and within the industry, slighter control of superiors and expanded authorities along with additional tasks to be completed for the stability of the organization.

*     Company Policies

     Associated strategies, guidelines, formations, and constitutions of an organization are directly influenced by the job satisfaction of employees. Highly dominating and dictating design is more harmful than a variety of additionally extended and self-governing structure. The democratic policy is more comfortable for the honest employees who are excited to hold-up the challenges on behalf of the company while proceeding with the organizational goals.

The policies of an organization having a demand position in governing the behavioral pattern of workers as well as it will lead to generating productive or gloomy affection with regard to the organization. While the broad-minded and impartial strategies guiding for higher job satisfaction, the dictatorial and authoritarian strategies will be constructing disappointment between the employees, because they notice that they are not being served honourable and may undergo force. Therefore, it is realized that an autonomous formation with an impartial & generous system is connected with high job satisfaction.


  § Work Environmental Factors are consisting of,

*      Supervision            - Supervision is one of the main factors of the work environment sector and it is the somewhat prime source of job satisfaction.The first dimension of supervisory style is Employee Centeredness. It is explained that the supervisor takes a personal interest in employee welfare and is friendly and supportive. Hence, under such a situation, there is job satisfaction. The second dimension of supervisory style is Participation. The supervisor establishes a supportive relationship with subordinates which allows them to involve in decision making which influences their jobs and to creates a supportive domain. Within that highly advantageous surrounding, the satisfaction level of the employee in the organization is very high. 

*     Workgroup/Team      - The effect on job satisfaction depends on the classification of the team or group are in different ways. A companion team is having the capability of set-out a strong foundation, offer guidance and relief, and co-operation to the members, while providing opportunities to interact with. It will lead to a positive impact on job satisfaction. When members have a close frame of mind and principles, the team has a powerful root of satisfaction. On the other hand, if an employee is not blended with the other team members, it will proceed to a negative impact on job satisfaction. With compared to large teams with plenty of workers, the smaller team furnish a chance to interact. Hence, the consistency and the status of mutual relationships within the team play an important part in the job satisfaction of employees.

*  Working condition   - When there are an impressive work environment and working condition, the Employees feel physical and mental comfort. Their aspiration is that the working environment should be clean and healthy. There are some aspects related to physical surrounding which affects the job satisfaction of employees such as cleanliness of the workplace, noise controlled calm and quiet domain, adequate lighting facilities, balanced temperature, air, humidity & ventilation facilities, the supply of appropriate tools and equipment, expected working hours and flexibility of change, etc. Poor working condition is heavily affected for the dissatisfaction of employment rather than the contribution of desired working conditions. Because, unfavourable domain leads the way to physical embarrassment and insecurity.

§         §  Work itself consists of,  

*      Job scope        - When the measure of authority, work speed and reaction become high-rise, the opportunity of work and the volume of job satisfaction will also increase.

*      Variety             - An average volume of variation is comparatively better than the extravagant diversity or compact diversity as those extremes create uncertainty and tension and the other end repetition and exhaust which both lead to dissatisfaction.

*  Autonomy & Freedom    - Shortage of self-determination and privilege on project techniques, and work tempo, lead the way of an employee to weak and frustrated, because most of the time, employees are not agreeing to control and regulate them by supervisors in each and every phase.

*  Role ambiguity & role conflict    - When employees do not aware of the exact task and expectations of the employer, the origin of uncertainty Cn be observed and it will lead to disappointment regarding the career.

*    Interesting work     - When the service is extraordinary captivating and demanding and come up with standards, high level of job satisfaction observed by such employees when compared with the workers whose career is uninteresting and dull.

§      §     Personal Factors are consisting of,

*      Age & Seniority      - When the process by which time passes, when become mature with the age, people make a move into additional inspirational, answerable and responsible placement and this is the same effect on the employees also. When the employees become sensible and less visionary, they are willing to acquire convenient assets and rewards and in a position to grateful about the condition. The employees who are not willing to cope with the situation with the time are often dissatisfying with the career.

*    Tenure           - The employees who are having continuous service and extended service in the employment, such workers lead the way to higher job satisfaction with an adequate confirmation on high job security. As they are assured with high job security, such employees are having the privilege to design there having a future accomplishment.

*    Personality       - Self-confidence, Self-respect, Adulthood, Will power, Self-determination, and authority are some of the natural attributes which directly influence job satisfaction. And also, according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, when the personality features are higher the job satisfaction is also at a high level. Such satisfaction derived from the inside of the respective person and it is a justification of the character.
